CSX CARGO TRAIN CARRYING MOLTEN SULFUR DERAILS IN CENTRAL FLORIDA

FOUR TRAIN CARS CARRYING MOLTEN SULFUR DERAILED EARLY MONDAY NEAR LAKELAND, FLORIDA. Local residents have been warned to stay indoors and close their windows as several cars are believed to have leaked. CSX says no injuries have been reported, and the cause of the derailment is under investigation.

CSX Spokesman Rob Doolittle describes molten sulfur as "a hazardous material used in making rubber, detergent and fertilizers."

SENATE BILL 572 HAS PASSED - STATEMENT BY CARE FL CHAIRMAN BRENT HANLON

THE FLORIDA SENATE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE PASSED SENATE BILL 572 BY SENATOR DEBBIE MAYFIELD ON NOVEMBER 14. This bill establishes the Florida High Speed Passenger Rail Safety Act. Brent Hanlon, chairman of Citizens Against Rail Expansion in Florida (CARE FL), released the following statement regarding the committee's passage of the bill.

"Today's vote by the Senate Transportation Committee demonstrates the commitment our elected leaders have to the safety and well-being of Florida residents and taxpayers," he begins.

MAYFIELD REFILES HIGH-SPEED PASSENGER RAIL BILL: SB 572

STATE SENATOR DEBBIE MAYFIELD HAS REFILED THE FLORIDA HIGH-SPEED PASSENGER RAIL SAFETY ACT. This would provide the Florida Department of Transporation the authority to modify any high-speed passenger rail services in the state, as well as requiring railroad companies operating a high-speed rail system to be solely responsible for maintenance, improvement, and upgrade fees, etc.

Mayfield's first bill, S 386, was denied in Community Affairs.

SB 572 was filed on October 20 and has been placed on the Committee agenda to be discussed tomorrow (November 14) at 2 p.m.

WOMAN KILLED BY BRIGHTLINE TRAIN, DEPUTIES SAY

A WOMAN DIED SHORTLY AFTER BEING HIT BY A BRIGHTLINE TRAIN WEDNESDAY MORNING IN DEERFIELD BEACH, DEPUTIES SAID. Jennifer Reed, 35, died shortly before 7 a.m. after being hit by the northbound train on the tracks just east of Dixie Highway, south of Northeast 48 Street.

Medical examiners were seen removing Reed's body at about 9:30. Broward Sheriff's spokeswoman Joy Oglesby said that no passengers were on the train when the crash happened and no other injuries were reported.
