ALL ABOARD FLORIDA: THE HORROR BEHIND CURTAIN NO. 2

All Aboard Florida (AAF) is like a rigged “Let’s Make a Deal” TV experience.

They tell you the Big Prize is the shiny new passenger train service. But no matter which curtain you choose, you’re going to get what’s behind curtain No. 2 — the freight-train nightmare from hell. The flashy passenger train is the bait.

THE HEART OF THE AAF MATTER BY STEVE RYAN, CARE FLORIDA

By Steve Ryan, August 26, 2014  Care FL.

GOVERNMENT CAN RUN HIGH SPEED RAIL ANYWHERE THEY WANT REGARDLESS OF COST TO ANIMALS AND HUMANS

Letter BY Frank Leroux, Micco To TCPalm

These 125 mph, ground-level machines will travel from Miami to Cocoa Beach, over to Orlando and then back to Miami 16 times daily each way. This adds up to 8,000 miles of at-risk tracks all creatures (including the Florida panther) will have to cross.

THUMB UP: INDIAN RIVER COUNTY COMMISSION REJECTS ALL ABOARD FLORIDA REQUEST

NO WAY!’: In what may be a harbinger of things to come along the Treasure Coast, the Indian River County Commission rejected a request this week from All Aboard Florida that would have cost taxpayers money.

ALL ABOARD FLORIDA ORGANIZERS LAUNCHED SNEAK ATTACK ON PEOPLE OF FLORIDA

Letter from Ray Centola, Port St. Lucie To TCPalm

I agree that All Aboard Florida is a prime concern, and should be for all of Florida. It smacks at the corruption that infests this state.

Which raises the question: Why was this plan not brought to the people's attention long before it got beyond the planning stage?

LETTER: COST OF HIGH SPEED RAIL WILL BE HIGHER THAN PROPOSERS CLAIM

Letter from Alice Johnson, Vero Beach to TCPalm

I believe that the All Aboard Florida project can't be built for the announced budget of $2.1 billion. I have researched The Reason Foundation, Acela financial statements, the Internet and many news articles on other high-speed rail projects.

HIGH SPEED RAIL MUDDIES FLORIDA GOVERNOR'S RACE

By Rachael Dovey August 20 NextCity

Florida’s November election could impact the future of a high-speed rail project, one of only three nationally in the works. Like the projects in Texas (read “The Bullet Train That Could Change Everything”) and California, the privately financed train is a hotbed of controversy, which may play out at ballot boxes along the state’s southeastern coast and even determine Florida’s next governor.

Two crew members were killed, another two members were injured.

“The skies were just black it didn’t look like it was night time. There were no stars you could see.  It was just black covered in smoke,” said 10 year-old evacuee Jimmy Allred.

Right now, investigators say they have no idea how the two moving Union Pacific trains slammed together.

MURPHY: ALL ABOARD FLORIDA MISTAKE FOR SOUTHEAST COAST

By Bill DiPaolo -Aug. 20, 2014 Palm Beach Post

All Aboard Florida is a “high-speed fiscal and safety mistake” that would be a burden to taxpayers, U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy told about 220 people at a breakfast meeting Wednesday.

“There is not a single passenger train that is profitable. Bringing passenger and freight trains up the busy areas of the East Coast presents serious safety issues,” said Murphy, D-Jupiter, at the PGA National Resort & Spa.

RAILROAD EXEC DEBATES INDIAN RIVER COUNTRY COMMISSIONER DURING SOLD OUT EVENT

BY Henry A. Stephens  TCPALM

VERO BEACH — It’s illogical to think All Aboard Florida would seek a $1.6 billion federal loan, and spend “hundreds of millions” of its own money, on passenger-rail improvements just to add more freight trains to the Florida East Coast Railway, All Aboard President Michael Reininger told the audience of a sold-out debate Wednesday.

CONGRESSMAN MURPHY'S LETTER TO GENERAL DODARO

Dear Comptroller General Dodaro,

All Aboard Florida’s (AAF) plan to run 32 additional trains daily through the Palm Beaches and the Treasure Coast of Florida poses significant threats to our community’s public safety, economy, and our way of life. Although initially sold as a “private” project, AAF is actually seeking more than a billion dollars in taxpayer-backed loans from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). Before the FRA risks public money on this project, it is imperative that AAF’s relevant financial viability be thoroughly reviewed.

ALL ABOARD FLORIDA AIMED AT SERVING INCREASE FREIGHT TRAFFIC

Letter from Dennis Lyndon, Stuart to TCPalm

All Aboard Florida is a Trojan Horse, a ploy to use federal funds to expand and update the archaic Florida East Coast Industries rail system in the guise of providing high-speed, essentially nonstop, passenger service between Miami and Orlando. That's the way I see it.

The AAF plan includes 353 grade crossings. No other so-called "high-speed passenger rail system" in the world allows for at-grade crossings.

ALL ABOARD'S MATH DOES NOT COMPUTE

Letter to the TCPalm from Jim Henry, Boca Raton

There is now sufficient data and analysis to make an informed decision about All Aboard Florida. AAF’s analyses stretch the definition of “facts.”

I am supposed to believe that the West Palm Beach station will have exactly 1,839 and 1,987 people board and get off daily. Ridiculous precision and a sure sign of sloppy technical analysis.

Letter: Argument for benefits of All Aboard Florida is just ‘pie in the sky'

Letter from Howard Staiman, Stuart

It's interesting that guest columnist Michael Fort ("Retire provincial attitudes; think about great future, July 27) considers anyone who opposes the All Aboard Florida express rail project "hicks, shortsighted, and ridiculous." This is an old debate trick; if you haven't a winning argument, denigrate and belittle the other side.

Worn, fractured rail caused Ellicott City train derailment, NTSB determines

"They should do investigations and studies to determine if rails should be life-limited. We haven't done that hard work. They do it in aviation, but not in rail."
