Residents from Miami to West Palm Beach should wake up and realize what 32 more railroad closings a day will do to traffic around Dixie Highway.
The long-distance passenger train service, All Aboard Florida, is a great initiative and on its way. But can it please consider using the CSX tracks for trains north of West Palm Beach to Orlando?
It is clear All Aboard Florida has the right to use the tracks owned by Florida East Coast Railway. However, the improvement costs paid for by FEC, taxpayers and local communities — and the harm facing communities north of West Palm Beach, where the tracks run through the center of towns — is detrimental. Not to mention the tremendous negative effect on the marine and tourist industry in Jupiter and Stuart.
All Aboard Florida should open a dialogue with CSX and consider improving and accessing its tracks. That way, AAF would gain the support of all Florida residents and taxpayers — not just those in Orlando, Broward and Miami-Dade. CSX has the capacity and can offer the rail for less cost in improvements.
All Aboard Florida is well aware that concern is growing among Treasure Coast citizens. Many people here would appreciate if the company would get beyond its reply about its rights, and create a win-win while maintaining its objectives.
