SEN. DEBBIE MAYFIELD PLANS TO PUSH FOR MORE STATE OVERSIGHT OF ALL ABOARD FLORIDA’S BRIGHTLINE HIGH-SPEED PASSENGER RAIL SERVICE. This bill was founded by troubling issues found from reading an Oct. 31 report from the Legislature’s Office of Program Poly Analysis and Government Accountability.
“The key issues [Florida law analysts] have identified were the same issues addressed in the high-speed passenger rail bill that I introduced last year,” Mayfield stated. “Specifically, that the Florida Department of Transportation has the authority to provide oversight of safety regulations for the railroads.”
This bill proposes creating a regulatory body - separate from the FDOT - to oversee railroad safety, and will include ideas such as updating safety rules on railroad crossings and corridors and a multi-jurisdictional trespassing law enforcement.
Sen. Mayfield has pushed for this bill for the past two legislative sessions.
