ON APRIL 12, THE TREASURE COAST FIRE CHIEFS' ASSOCIATION (TCFCA) SENT A LETTER TO GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT regarding emergency service and LNG (liquified natural gas) concerns, and services to prepare them for what is coming.
"As proud as we are of our departments... we have concerns regarding the increased use and transportation of LNG (liquified natural gas) by rail, the increased freight traffic containing all kinds of hazards in volumes we may not be accustomed to, as well as passenger traffic along the FEC railway which we have never had to deal with before. It troubles us that we are not adequately prepared for these changes and additional demands on our departments."
The TCFCA request proper training regarding transportation accidents of LNG, CNG, and other flammables, including alcohol, proper equipment to handle chemical spills such as LNG, as well as community improvements.
"This list is not meant to be all inclusive. It is just a sampling of the preparations we believe would be necessary to address potential emergencies that may occur as railway transportation increases... Though we always hope for the best, we are obligated to plan and prepare for the worst case scenario, not matter how unlikely it is to occur."
