Florida has already built a train - but it falls short. The SunRail began construction in 2012 and became open to the public in 2014. However, by the train’s first year, SunRail was at a lost of $27 million. Unfortunately, things haven’t gotten better. In 2016, ridership continued to drop in the face of low gas prices.
This project is a sad instance where Floridians have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on a project that loses money just charging customers to ride it. SunRail will either face the issue of either raising ticket prices, or pass the costs onto the millions of Floridians who had rejected the project.
