Opponents of the All Aboard Florida high speed rail project fear the same tracks will be used to transport hazardous liquefied natural gas.
Local officials and opponents of the project raised their concerns at the St. Lucie County Commission meeting Tuesday evening.
Florida East Coast Railways has reportedly applied to the Federal Railroad Administration to start transporting LNG.
Among the groups raising the alarm is the Presidents Council of Hutchinson Island, which represents more than 5,000 homeowners.
"What they're doing is putting millions of lives at risk up and down the east coast of Florida to make billions for Fortress Investment Group," council president Pat Pacitti said.
